Aaron Copland

Observations

Aaron Copland found inspiration for this piece by way of a dance hall in Mexico. Even without knowing how to read music, one can feel the notes skipping along, and his note “Tempo” suggests his desire that the rhythm be kept at a pace. Copland, the composer, and Leonard Bernstein, the conductor, were friends as well as colleagues. The good natured cartoons of Copland at the bottom were made by Bernstein – no hard feelings resulted.
