Sean Hickey

American composer, Sean Hickey, was born in Detroit and began his musical journey with an electric guitar at age 12 and “a stack of Van Halen records, the early ones of course”. He studied jazz guitar at Oakland University, and later graduated with a degree in composition and theory from Wayne State University. He continued his studies in New York with Justin Dello Joio and Gloria Coates. He has written works for an incredibly wide range of instruments and includes a film score and music for a children’s play in his resume. Mr. Hickey has fulfilled commissions for Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the St. Petersburg Symphony, New York’s One World Symphony, among others. The 2005 release by Naxos American Classics of his piece Left at the Fork in the Road broke the Billboard Top 100 Classical Chart and he is the recipient of eleven consecutive ASCAP awards. Mr. Hickey’s works have been performed around the world. He has contributed liner notes to dozens of classical recordings and is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. 2019 has seen critically acclaimed recordings of his works on the Innova and Toccata Classics labels.
