Queler: Wagner, “Tristan und Isolde”
Maestra Eve Queler, born January 11, 1931, is an American conductor and one of the first women to establish a career in this traditionally male-dominated field. She is recognized as a pioneer in the world of opera, especially through her work as director of the Opera Orchestra of New York where she mounted the highest quality performances of seldom heard masterpieces. She has conducted over 100 operas at Carnegie Hall and also symphonic work with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland and Montreal Symphonies, among others. In addition to the 2010 National Endowment for the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award, she received the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (the highest award presented by the French government), and the Sanford Medal, Yale University’s highest musical honor.
